Kilnwick (or Kilnwick-on-the-Wolds) is a village in the East Riding of Yorkshire. It is situated in the Yorkshire Wolds approximately 5 miles (8 km) south of Driffield town centre and 7 miles (11 km) north of Beverley town centre. It lies 1 mile (1.6 km) west of the A614 road, and 3 miles (5 km) east of Middleton on the Wolds. York 28 miles, Hull centre 19 miles
Kilnwick is a small, friendly village with many family oriented events occurring throughout the year, often at the village hall and the recreation ground. Other events occur at the local primary school in nearby Beswick. The village"s own caterer, who runs an outside catering business, is on hand for outside catering when required . There is also a youth group and "parkling" group for younger children.
The quiet village has a rich history and the Kiln part of its name is believed to originate from a brick making industry and kiln in the village. The land to the west of the village was part of the Kilnwick House / Hall estate and this is where The Coach House is located. The mature trees and woodland landscape which surround the site of the original house were planted by its various owners.
The original site of Kilnwick House / Hall has medieval origins and historic links with nearby Watton Priory. The hall has been the home for various owners across the centuries : Robert Holgate, who later became Archbishop of York, and passed on his death to the Earl of Warwick; Richard Thekestone in 1599, Nicholas Stringer, 1614 and Thomas Grimston, who had been bequeathed the property by Vice-Admiral Medley in 1747. The Georgian family occupied the house only seasonally and there is diary evidence that the journey would be made to Kilnwick from Grimston Garth in the autumn of each year. The estate remained in the hands of the Grimston family until 1943 when, on the death of Captain Luttrell Grimston Byrom it was sold.
Unfortunately most of the main property was destroyed in 1951, the 17th century servants block remain as a dwelling, with the rest of the site forming a beautiful hamlet for 4 other dwellings including the Coach House.
